Race for RP is a non-profit working to increase research and awareness for Relapsing Polychondritis, a rare autoimmune disease. As Race for RP looked to wrap up an exciting and groundbreaking race season, the need arose for a video that emphasized who Race for RP is, what the needs of RP survivors are, and how people can become involved in the cause.
We looked at this video as an opportunity to give relative outsiders a glimpse into the realities of being a person with Relapsing Polychondritis. While many of our doctors and research partners could describe the symptoms of RP, we wanted to tie the audience into the problem at a human level. By reaching out to multiple RP patients and getting their stories on tape we were able to create a moving introduction to why Race for RP matters, and how the drive for a cure is affecting those with RP, even in their day to day struggles. Tying in the research aspect straight from the perspective of our partnered doctors allowed us to highlight the hope for the future of this disease and give incentive to join Race for RP’s cause.
As with any non-profit, the key is emotionally motivating potential partners to first care about and connect with the problem, and then join in the search for a solution
At the end of the video we needed an ask, because knowledge and emotional connection to an issue is not enough to bring about a solution. We decided the best way to solicit a positive response from the viewer was to go back to the human impact Race for RP is making. By ending the video with the patients acknowledging the need for more support from the general public we brought the video around full circle, because at the end of the day this cause is all about trying to improve life for those who suffer daily with Relapsing Polychondritis.
